The painting was commissioned in 1995 by a US-Russia based company to commemorate the historic meeting of the Russian and American armies at Torgau, Germany in 1945. The painting is based on a Life Magazine photo of Lt. Alexander Silvasko and Lt. Bill Robertson. The original painting was intended as a gift to the Russian people from the American people and presently hangs in the World War II Museum in Moscow, dedicated in 1995 in the presence of President Bill Clinton.

(Commissioned after the Picture of the Week: Life Magazine, May 7, 1945, pg 31) On the Elbe River near the town of Torgau the historic junction of the US and Russian armies took place on April 25 when a group of Americans lead by 2nd Lieut. William D. Robertson of the US First Army met a group of Russians led by Lieut. Alexander Sylvashko of the First Ukrainian Army. To symbolize the momentous occasion, the lieutenants embrace. Then the Russian got out captured German food and wine and held a celebration to mark the end of World War II. |

50 years after the photo appeared in Life Magazine, Lt. Bill Robertson and Lt. Alexander Silvasko reunite and take one final embrace. While in Russia, they were given honorary recognition by President Clinton. |
